A lot has been said and written about Artificial Intelligence till now, but very few of us might have a clear idea on what impacts it can make on our lives or what are the impacts it has already made. You might have seen the movies like Matrix, Ex Machina, Blade Runner, I Robot, The Terminator etc. In all these movies one thing is common it brings fascination as well a sense of scare among the mankind.
More to Fear from Humans than AI
AI has gathered a lot of media attention in the recent past be it for an autonomous vehicles and improved robotics are some of the sectors which has grabbed the attention. Many of the researchers have found that the risk brough by the AI might not bring as much risks as the one that still exist in our society. Automation through an AI will surely increase the productivity but it will not improve the living conditions of the people. AI will surely increase the pollutions and resource exhaustion if we will not be regulating it properly.
There are also many researchers who found that AI in itself is not a threat or danger to the mankind. However they feel that it can result in further economic divisions until and unless if there is nothing done to reduce this gap. Many of the researchers have found that there is nothing to worry like its been told in the science fiction movies. At the outmost it will bring economic advantages to a certain part of the society and this will increase the rich-poor economics.
Dark Side of AI
When it comes to the dark side of Artificial Intelligence (AI) we know that there are destructive tools like 3D weapons which already exists for sale. Recently an AI scenario has developed where gun is combined with a drone fitted with a high resolution camera and a facial recognition algorithm which will be able to detect the specific faces of the target and then assassinate them as it flies across the sky.
Action Needs to be Taken Soon
There are researchers and scholars who have called for an action that needs to be taken to avoid any potential dangers or risks. There are some weapons been developed like legal autonomous weapon system or the killer robots is considered as one of the pitfalls. There are many who suggest that action needs to be taken soon against the development of these weapons. There are some people who suggest that development of killer robots can reduce the number of soldiers that die in a war.
Facial Recognition – A Perfect Breakthrough
Consumers buying habits has influenced the business sector in a major way. Facial recognition technology which was once limited to security and surveillance system has made it possible for the companies to predict consumer behaviour and thus accelerate the revenue growth.
A facial recognition technology can identify and authenticate the individuals based on capturing the face of individuals using a high technology camera. These images are compared with other captured images. The calculations when it comes to facial recognition is complex which includes the distance between individuals eyes, cheekbones as well eyebrows. It’s been said that Google’s face recognition technology has an accuracy of almost 100%. One of the leading IT analyst has suggested that password and finger sensors aren’t working as it should be. Facial recognition technology is far better and natural as well and it can be implemented in a way that it feels much more magical.
When a computer is able to recognise the users and their emotions a whole new user experience is created. That is the reason many of the high tech companies are buying facial recognition technology. Most of them are buying facial recognition for startups which is to bring the friendlier way to interact with the mobile phones and computers which will be able to add the dimension of trust and security.
Machine Learning and Deep Learning a Part of Artificial Intelligence
In this current storm of AI the deep learning term is also making its impact. First and foremost thing that one must understand is machine learning is not another word of AI but moreover it can be called as a sub part of Artificial intelligence. Machine learning aims to develop the programs with a pure motive to get the exposure from training data.
Deep learning can be called as a branch of machine learning, where the models are the long chains of geometric function, applied one after the other form of layers.
Some of the applications where AI is being applied are as follows:
AI in healthcare - The biggest challenge that AI technology faces today is on improving the results of the patients as well reducing the cost of medication. Companies are applying the machine learning in healthcare industry. One of the biggest advantages of using AI is that it understands the natural language.
AI in gaming - AI is playing a crucial role in strategic gaming such as chess, poker and other games. Here machine is able to think of large positions which requires a great amount of knowledge.
AI in Language Processing - It has become possible to interact with the computers which is able to understand the natural languages spoken by the humans.
AI in Expert Systems - For reasoning and advising purpose there are some applications which is integrating with machine, software and special information. These systems provide explanations and expert advice to the users.
AI in Vision Systems - An AI system is able to understand, interpret and comprehend as well the visual input on the computer. Some of the examples are discussed below:
- A spying aeroplane is able to take the photographs, which is able to extract important information and the map of the areas.
- Doctors are using clinical expert systems to diagnose the patients.
- Nowadays even the police is taking the help of an AI in recognising the face of criminals with the help of portraits made by the forensic artists.
AI in Speech Recognition - There are some intelligent systems which are capable of hearing and evaluating the language in terms of sentences and get meanings while humans talk. AI can handle different accents, words, noises in the background and change human noise as well which comes up with some noises due to cold.
AI in Handwriting Recognition – The handwriting recognition software helps to read the texts written by a pen or on a screen. This AI helps in recognizing the shapes of the letters and then helps it to convert into editable text.
AI in Robotics – Robots are essentially helpful in performing the tasks given by the humans. A robot has sensors which helps in detecting the physical data from the real world such as light, temperature, movement, bump as well pressure. Intelligent robots have multiple sensors and huge memory. Robots are capable of learning from their
Intelligent Robots − Robots are able to perform the tasks given by a human. They have sensors to detect physical data from the real world such as light, heat, temperature, movement, sound, bump, and pressure. They have efficient processors, multiple sensors and huge memory, to exhibit intelligence. In addition, they are capable of learning from their mistakes and they can adapt to the new environment.
History of Artificial Intelligence
In spite of having all the current boost on Artificial Intelligence it is not a new field of study. But AI has been officially started in the year 1956 at Dartmouth college where many of the eminent personality gathered together to brainstorm on intelligence simulation. This happened only a few years after Asimov set their own laws of robotics.
As soon as the research study was published and ideas were risen from the summer meeting, a flow of government funding was reserved for the study in creating a non biological intelligence. At that time AI seemed to be easily reachable, but it was told that it is not the case. At the end of the sixties, many of the researchers realised that AI was one of the toughest field to act on this made the funding to get slow simultaneously.
In United States, the reasons to fund AI was mainly due to the idea of creating a machine translator. This made the data limited available to feed the algorithms as well as scarce computation power of the engines of that time period. This made the field collapsing and AI tech was not used that decade.
In 1980’s a new wave of funding in UK and Japan was motivated by the introduction of “expert systems”. These programs were able to simulate the skills of human experts in specific domains. One of the most active players in those times of Japan where they wanted to create the fifth generation computer which indirectly forced the funding of the research of AI.
